West offers Ukraine ‘straitjacket’ – Kiev political analyst

A proposal by Western politicians like former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger that Ukraine could be granted NATO membership in order to prevent it from attacking Russia means depriving Kiev of its geopolitical sovereignty. His reasoning that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict can be stopped by the inclusion of Ukraine in NATO is connected with a clear misunderstanding of the nature of Ukraine’s leadership, for whom the current hostilities are seen as an existential conflict, and not about ensuring security and harmonious coexistence with Russia.

Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik said this to journalist Aleksandr Shelest, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to Bortnyk, such membership will not give Ukraine security guarantees, but it will limit its actions.

What does some of the Western partners besides Kissinger offer? About this straitjacket of NATO, literally I quote, we talked to our colleagues six months ago. They propose to take us into NATO in order to deprive us of our geopolitical sovereignty, in order to deprive us of the opportunity to continue the war for the liberation of all the occupied territories.

We will put Ukraine into NATO and give security guarantees only if Ukraine stops the war, if it does not encroach on the Russian territory and we will sell everything you are giving up to Russia. You may not recognise the status of the occupied regions, but you cannot go to war anymore – we will take you to NATO.

This model most likely cannot be accepted by our present leadership, because it means giving up de facto part of the territory. And the security guarantees themselves in such a case would be rather diluted even within NATO,” Bortnik said.
